Clinical Resources for GPs and Referrers

Brief practical guides designed to support initial clinical reasoning when psychological presentations overlap and consultation time is limited.

Each resource includes common patient language, useful initial questions, assumptions to approach carefully, and indications for further assessment or referral.

Featured guide

Adult ADHD, autism, or both?
A brief guide for general practice

Adults may raise ADHD or autism part-way through an appointment booked for another concern, often after having already read extensively about both. This two-page guide covers:

  • what patients commonly say when they raise the possibility;

  • three initial questions that may help clarify the picture;

  • overlapping and alternative explanations;

  • assumptions worth approaching carefully;

  • factors that may warrant comprehensive assessment.

This is the first in a growing series of brief clinical guides. Future topics will include BPD, complex PTSD and broader emotion-regulation difficulties, and perfectionism, overcontrol and possible OCPD.

Is there a psychological presentation you would find useful for a future guide? Referrers are welcome to email suggestions to admin@isabellalaypsychology.com.au
